JOSEF & PHILIPP BRUNDLMAYER WEINLAND, AUSTRIA

Josef Brundlmayer started out making wine as a side project in 1980 with not much more then his hands and a passion for wine. By 1990, it had blossomed to become a true calling. Over the decades, the family farm would be transformed into a respected winegrowing operation. Small but perfectly formed with well-kept vineyards, managed by people for whom family means everything. In 2015, his son Philipp took the reins and continues with a passion for wine, craftsmanship, and family tradition. Philipp had the luxury of inheriting 45 acres scattered over 52 plots, mainly Gruner Veltliner, many of them the top sites in the Krems Valley. Most of their sites are on the rich loess terraces of the two villages of Gedersdorf and Rohrendorf. Many of the steps in the winegrowing process are completed by hand, using techniques passed down from one generation to the next. They plant greenery to ensure diversity and fertile ground, and to preserve the integrity of the vineyards. Philipp doesn’t use insecticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Every single vineyard is vinified separately in order to mirror the terroir and its differences as precisely as possible.
