CANTINE LUIGI MAFFINI CAMPANIA, ITALY

Luigi Maffini’s vineyards lie nestled in the picturesque Cilento region of Campania in the Southern heart of Italy, with a backdrop of rugged hills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and abundant Mediterranean vegetation and olive trees and extremely well suited for viticulture. Cilento is a coastal area south of Naples protected by a national park designation, and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. The Maffini family’s winemaking journey began in the 1970s when Luigi’s father first planted vines, but it was in 1996 that Luigi and Raffaella Maffini first bottled Kratos, and Luigi’s vision of crafting wines of integrity and purity from indigenous grapes truly flourished. Their vineyard sites, Castellabate and Giungano, are meticulously tended and organically farmed, yielding exceptional Fiano and Aglianico grapes. They have gradually grown their estate to 37 acres, and have gained more plaudits with every subsequent vintage. Over the last few years, along with addition of new plantings adjacent to existing vineyards, Luigi has extensively upgraded and refurbished the winery giving him even better tools at his disposal to craft magnificent organic wines. . He and his wife Raffaella, both graduates of Naples university, together run the winery, and share the land with their two children and three dogs, as well as a diverse array of wildlife—from wild rabbits and foxes to hedgehogs and hawks, adding to the enchantment of their vineyard landscape.
